General Information
Forward
There is a breed of freak that has existed for years, but has never really been classified. This creature spends countless hours searching for music. The reasons for their obsessions vary. There are those who have the treasure hunting disease; those who are obsessed with a particular release, band, or genre; those who want to find the absolute best deal (aka cheapskates); completists; audiophiles; fans (fanatics); and many other varieties. These are the MUSIC BUYING FREAKS. If this sounds like you, then get comfortable, cuz baby, you're home.
What is Music Buying Freak?
Music Buying Freak is a list of places to buy music online.
What Music Buying Freak Is Not
Though I have purchased CDs from many of the shops listed here, I have not even come close to interacting with all of them. Therefore, I must state that the links herein are not intended to be my personal endorsement of the shops on the lists. I have dealt with most of the "Featured Shops", and a many of the others, so if you have a question about a particular place email me and I may be able to give you more information.
Link Submission
If you know of a shop that you think should be here, email me and I will check it out. I cannot guarantee that all submissions will be included but if they sell music there is a good chance I will add them. Please also indicate whether the shop sells used items or only new stuff. I will check out the suggested links but some shops don't come out and just say if they are selling new or used items.
Main Page
Definitely the page you want to start with to see all of the wonderful new places I have found that will gladly take your money and send you little round plastic discs. Here you will find any announcements or news from me, featured shops, and the newly added shops section. In an attempt to keep the site fresh and alive, and keep you coming back, I try to add links as I find them rather than doing large updates. New links that show up in the Newly Added Shops section may not show up in their respective categories right away, so keep an eye on this section.
Used CDs
My main focus has always been used CDs, and thus, this category will be the most "healthy". It is the largest and most comprehensive section, and it will typically be the most up-to-date. Many of the places in Used CDs also sell new CDs, vinyl, cassettes, posters, videos, DVDs, games, and any number of other things, but they get into this section based on their used CD stock.
New CDs
The places on this list are intended to be shops that sell only new CDs. So if your into buying new stuff this section is for you. It is also a good reference resource to check the availability or current price of a particular release. In other words, if you're wondering if a CD you see at a used shop is out of print, checking its status at Amazon.com can be helpful.
Vinyl
Here you will find places that sell vinyl. Some sell only vinyl, and some also sell other media types, but they all have some stock of vinyl rekkids. Many of these shops are repeated in one or more of the other sections.
Specialty/Genre Specific
This section is reserved for shops that specialize in a certain genre or category, or those which have a significant level of stock in the specific category. The former you will only find in this sections, the latter you may find repeated in other categories. Note: Since these places specialize in certain areas they are more likely to have subculture related content that you may find offensive.
More Lists
I am not the only, or first, person with this idea. Here are some of the others. Some are from individuals, some are part of big name search engines. I like Music Buying Freak best.
Miscellaneous Links
Other resources for music buying freaks like blank media, currency converters, etc.
Graveyard
This is a weird section. Most of the links here were formerly on one of the other pages. These places either closed down, changed, remained unchanged for years, or somehow otherwise seem useless or lame. I could just delete them, but I prefer to put them here. What if I need them someday?
History of Music Buying Freak
This list was started sometime in 1996 or 1997 as my personal list of places to buy CDs. I was (and still am) totally into buying selling and trading CDs. The list started to get pretty big, so in 1997 when I finally got some web space I decided to share my list. I placed it online as "Thee Coolest List of Places to Buy CDs". I began to get the word out by submitting it to search engines and just telling people. After maybe a year or two I decided to change the name. I asked my wife for suggestions and, annoyed she said, "how about Debt Accelerator, because that is what it is doing to you". And thus was born the second name, "Debt Accelerator: Places to Buy CDs on the WWWeb". Fast forward to the year 2001. I was thinking about a color scheme change so I emailed my friend Josh to get his opinion. Having done an online ezine, he suggests that I think of a cool name and register a domain. I think to myself, "Woo, that seems like a big deal". He tells me about Dot Easy, I check it out, think of a name, and here we are.
Owner and Webmaster
My name is Chris and...and...I am a music buying freak. I write my HTML using NoteTab Light, which is just a fancy text editor with some bonus HTML code shortcuts. No browser specific web pages here! If you want to know more about me, I have a personal homepage which I neglect regularly.
Questions & Comments
I don't get a lot of questions or comments, but if you have one, feel free to email me at achrisk@musicbuyingfreak.com.
